WebMD has written an interesting article on how having a dog could help increase your life span! This is especially helpful if you are living by yourself! Â It showed that 11% were less likely to die of heart disease. This statistic does seem right given that dog owners are more likely to increase their activity level by walking their dog more often.
The study tracked more than 3.4 million Swedes, middle-aged and older, for 12 years. All were free of heart disease at the beginning of the study. The researchers reported that dog owners who lived alone were 11 percent less likely to die of heart disease and a third less likely to die from any cause, compared with those who lived alone and didn’t have a dog…. Our Pets Make Us Feel Happy
It also appears that our pets make us feel happy, by boosting our good mood! It certainly prevents you feeling as lonely and helps on giving you a purpose and a focus to your day. I know for me if know that a storm is coming I race home to make sure that my dog is indoors and has a safe spot to shelter. Our Pets really do become part of our family.
Having a Pet Really Isn’t that much trouble
I know what a lot of you are thinking “I’m too old to have a dog”! Stop kidding yourself! Â Sure a big dog might not be the way to go, they may very well just pull you right on over! But a medium sized dog would be ideal, anything smaller would require a lot more exercise then you have time for. To be honest, regardless of your age you should be trying to get out to grab some fresh air and get some gentle exercise, so why not start doing it with a new four-legged friend. Hey if there is a chance it might increase your Life Span then what stopping you from embracing a pet!
